Seasonal Support

It’s here and it’s beautiful, Springtime in Georgia! It is also that dreaded time of year when we walk outside to layers of fine green/yellow particles covering everything. We get to breathe all that in and not to mention all the stuff we can’t see, yikes!

Some people are not bothered at all by these seasonal changes but others really struggle. Many people turn to medications because they don’t know what to do. Unfortunately, medications only relieve the symptoms, and often not as well as natural remedies. Addressing seasonal symptoms usually takes patience and a combination of tactics.

If you are one of those people that struggle with seasonal discomfort you have lots of options available. Here are some herbs and vitamins frequently used for seasonal support.

  • Stinging nettles - Used as an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory.

  • Red clover – May help build the body’s resistance to allergies.

  • Quercetin – May help stop the production and release of histamine. *Please note that quercetin may interfere with certain medications, including antibiotics, cyclosporine and other medications changed by the liver.

  • Dong quai - Used as an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory.

  • Bromelain - The enzyme in pineapple, may help reduce swelling in the nose and sinuses.

  • Milk thistle – May help reduce allergic, inflammatory, and histaminic reactions and support liver function.

  • Gingko - Contains bioflavonoids and is used as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

  • Zinc - Zinc may help to support the adrenals which are affected by stress. Stress worsens the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

  • Probiotics - Probiotics modify the intestinal flora in the gut and help boost the immune system, plus they show promise in the treatment and prevention of allergies. Probiotic rich foods such as keifer and fermented vegetables are a great way to add probiotics to your diet.

  • Vitamin A - Supports the immune system, the inflammatory response and has antihistamine properties.

  • Vitamin C - Supports the immune system.

  • Local Honey and Bee Pollen – A popular option many people swear by but research studies have shown mixed results. Those that love it don’t care what research says.

  • Essential Oils – Many oils may support the body’s response to seasonal discomfort such as Eucalyptus. A popular combination of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint is favored my many. My personal favorite is a blend by doTerra called Breathe.

Simple tips to try are showering after being outdoors and before bed, limiting outdoor exposure if possible, wiping down pets after outdoor time, de-cluttering, dust using a damp cloth are all easy ways to help. Additional support can be found by trying a neti pot for gentle sinus rinse.

In addition to the lists above many people find a sinus/facial massage can provide relief and we offer a 30 minute head, neck and facial massage that can be tailored to each individuals discomfort.

We carry these natural items in the store and a few companies have created synergistic blends using key ingredients making it easy to take. Come in and ask us to show you what is here to help you through this season so you can enjoy the beauty it has to offer.
